Quick definition: One-time 6-month window when you can buy any Medigap plan with no medical underwriting.

Full explanation

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period is a one-time 6-month window beginning the first month you are 65 or older AND enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this window, insurers cannot deny you coverage or charge more for pre-existing conditions — this is called guaranteed-issue. Outside this window, in most states, insurers may use medical underwriting and can decline you or raise your rate based on health. A few states (NY, MA, CT, ME, VT) have year-round guaranteed issue. Birthday-rule states (CA, ID, IL, KY, LA, NV, OK, OR) and anniversary-rule states (MO, WA) have annual switching windows. This is the single most important Medicare enrollment window — use it.
