Medigap
Private insurance that pays the deductibles, copays, and coinsurance Original Medicare leaves you with.
Full explanation
Medicare Supplement Insurance, commonly called Medigap, is private insurance sold by carriers like AARP/UnitedHealthcare, Mutual of Omaha, and Cigna that pairs with Original Medicare (Parts A and B). It covers some or all of the cost-sharing โ deductibles, copays, coinsurance โ that Original Medicare leaves to you. Same-letter Medigap plans are federally standardized: Plan G from one carrier covers exactly the same benefits as Plan G from another. The only differences are price and the carrier's history of rate increases. Medigap plans are sold in standardized letters A through N (with Plans G and N most popular for new enrollees, and Plan F closed to those new to Medicare after January 1, 2020). Medigap does not cover prescription drugs โ you need a separate Part D plan.
