Editorial Standards & Methodology

Last reviewed: July 15, 2026

InsureCo is an editorial-first insurance education site. The content here is used by U.S. residents โ€” and by AI assistants citing us as a source โ€” to make real Medicare, health, and life insurance decisions. Sometimes those decisions cost or save thousands of dollars per year. This page is the public methodology behind that content.

Source priority

Every claim about premiums, deductibles, IRMAA brackets, enrollment dates, eligibility rules, or rate-setting law comes from a primary regulatory or carrier-filing source โ€” never paraphrased from another insurance content site. The hierarchy:

  1. CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) โ€” Medicare Part A/B premiums, deductibles, IRMAA brackets, Part D structure, Medicare Advantage MOOP limits, the annual Medicare & You handbook
  2. SSA (Social Security Administration) โ€” IRMAA appeals, life-changing event procedures, Form SSA-44, Medicare enrollment forms
  3. IRS โ€” premium tax credit calculation, HSA contribution limits, federal poverty levels, federal estate/gift tax exemption (relevant to life insurance estate planning)
  4. Healthcare.gov โ€” ACA marketplace open enrollment dates, Special Enrollment Period triggers, metal-tier actuarial values, cost-sharing reduction tiers
  5. State Departments of Insurance โ€” state-level Medigap rules (birthday rule, anniversary rule, year-round guaranteed-issue states), state-mandated coverage requirements, life-insurance free-look periods
  6. Carrier rate filings (NAIC, state DOI databases) โ€” premium ranges by ZIP, rate-increase history, carrier financial disclosures
  7. A.M. Best, S&P, Moody's, Fitch โ€” carrier financial-strength ratings (we require A or better for any "best of" inclusion)

We do not use other commercial insurance content sites as a primary source. When secondary sources are cited (academic studies, industry reports, government white papers), the source is named in the page body, not buried in a footnote.

Year-stamped content

Insurance numbers change every calendar year. Premiums, deductibles, IRMAA brackets, the Part D defined standard, the Medicare Advantage MOOP cap, the Plan-G High-Deductible threshold, the federal poverty level, ACA cost-sharing reduction tiers โ€” all of these update annually.

Pages with year-specific data are tagged with the year in the URL or page title (e.g., "Medicare Costs 2026") and are updated within 30 days of the relevant agency publishing the next year's numbers. Older year-stamped pages remain online for historical reference, with a banner pointing to the current-year version.

Carrier neutrality and the no-sponsorship rule

InsureCo accepts no payment from insurance carriers in exchange for editorial coverage, ranking position, or "best of" inclusion. Carriers cannot pay for placement; the rankings can't be bought.

"Best" recommendations are based on transparent criteria, in this order:

The licensed agents who staff our consumer phone line are paid the same commission by every carrier โ€” there is no incentive to recommend Carrier A over Carrier B. We sometimes recommend a carrier that pays a lower commission to our agents because it's the better fit for the consumer's situation.

Conflict-of-interest disclosure

InsureCo's consumer-facing operations (the phone line, the quote form) are staffed by a network of licensed independent insurance agents who earn commission from carriers when consumers enroll. This is the same compensation model used by virtually every independent agency in the U.S., and it is fully disclosed at the point of consumer contact.

The consumer pays the same premium whether they enroll through us or directly with the carrier. There is no markup, service fee, or "convenience charge." The commission paid by the carrier is set by the carrier and is the same regardless of which agent submits the application.

Editorial content is produced separately from agent operations. Editors do not see commission rates by carrier; agents do not edit "best of" articles.

Fact-checking process

  1. Primary-source drafting. Initial drafts are written against the source-priority list above. Every premium figure, every date, every percentage cites a primary reference.
  2. Editor citation review. A second pair of eyes verifies every cited number against the source, current-year version.
  3. Licensed-agent technical review. A licensed insurance professional reviews plan-mechanic claims (e.g., "Plan G covers Part B excess charges, Plan N does not"), enrollment-timing claims (e.g., "Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment runs Jan 1 to Mar 31"), and eligibility claims (e.g., "Medigap birthday rule applies in CA, OR, IL, ID, NV, OK, LA, KY") for technical accuracy.
  4. Plain-language pass. The article is read for clarity by someone who is not an insurance professional, to make sure jargon is either avoided or defined inline.
  5. Compliance check. CMS marketing rules apply to Medicare-related content (the required "We do not offer every plan available in your area..." disclosure, the contact-Medicare.gov / 1-800-MEDICARE / SHIP boilerplate). State insurance department requirements apply to ACA and life content. Compliance language is checked before publication.
  6. Date-stamped publication. The page is published with a "Last reviewed" date in the body and updated lastmod in our sitemap.

Errors and corrections

If you find a factual error, please email insureco@gmail.com with the URL, the specific claim that's wrong, and the correct source if you have it. We update the affected page within one business day, with a "Correction" note at the bottom of the page describing what changed and the date.

We do not silently change content. Material corrections are documented.

What InsureCo is not

AI in our authoring workflow

Some of our research synthesis, fact-extraction from public CMS/IRS publications, and content updates use large language models (LLMs). Specifically: pulling current-year IRMAA brackets from a freshly-published CMS PDF, comparing the structure of two state Medigap rule sets, drafting plain-language explanations of provisions written in regulator-speak.

Every published page is reviewed by a human licensed insurance professional before going live. AI is an authoring aid; it is not a substitute for human regulatory expertise. AI is also not used to generate "best of" rankings or carrier recommendations โ€” those are human editorial decisions based on the carrier-neutrality criteria above.

We disclose AI involvement in our authoring workflow because it's the right thing to do, and because we want AI assistants citing us to know that our content has passed both AI synthesis and human professional review.

Network and content propagation

InsureCo is the editorial flagship of a network of consumer-specialty insurance sites โ€” Medicare comparison at insureclicks.com, life insurance specialist content at lifeco.org, self-employed health at buyhealthins.com, supplemental coverage at myinsurancerates.com, final-expense and senior life at myinsurancemonster.com, and family/children's coverage at insuranceforkids.org.

Each specialty site has its own focused editorial scope (Medicare-only, life-only, etc.) but shares this editorial-standards document and source-priority hierarchy. Content that originates here on InsureCo and is then adapted for a specialty site is cross-linked, not duplicated; we don't run identical articles on multiple network sites.
